Welcome to the Smithridge STEM Academy

It is nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry.

- Albert Einstein

The Smithridge STEM Academy is centered around the Science lab. The Science lab is a place where students spend time exploring STEM concepts with the use of in-depth and rigorous classroom projects. Currently most of the STEM disciplines are addressed in the middle and high school setting however by the time students are in high school they have a general idea of the career path they want to follow. Exposing elementary school students to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics will ignite the "spark" within the student that middle school and high school can then sustain. According to former Secretary of Education Richard Riley, this is extremely important to the future of our nation as "we are presently preparing students for jobs that don't exist yet, technologies that haven't been invented yet, in order to solve problems we don't even know are problems yet."

This following pages will include links to the STEM concepts and resources available to help the Academy reach its key goals:

Key Goals:
  • to expose students to the STEM disciplines and inspire them to be part of the next generation STEM work force
  • to increase the percentage of 5th grade students who will score "proficient" or above on the state CRTs
  • to increase project based learning in the classroom
  • to establish community partners who will provide human and monetary resources to continue the success of the STEM Academy
